A ding (ting) from the late Shang on which the Tao Tieh in the previous
drawing occurs. there are many variations in the details of the Tao Tieh
and any given example may not conform exactly to any other. The Tao Tieh
is seen full front face and there has been much debate about how to understand
the design. Although it does not occur in this particular example, the
mouth of the creature is often over the leg of a ding in such a manner as
to suggest that the leg emerges from the mouth (see Lecture9.44)
