Art of East Asia: Neolithic & Bronze Age China

Four vessels from Shandung province. Beginning in about 2500 B.C.E. and lasting until about 1800 B.C.E. the Long Shan culture gradually superseded the later phases of the Yang Shao culture through out the Huang he valley. In this culture, the burial goods are of many types, painted pottery that is closely related to the later Yang Shao phases, and innovative ware primarily of two types, a gray ware with textured finishes and a polished black ware with a slip finish. In these later wares there are examples of the Li type design in which a vessel will be in the form of a tripod with open, hollow legs. Other goblets and cups are virtual predictors of modern designs that continue to the present day in Chinese art.
