This cross-section shows how the underlying mountain was carved to receive the sculpture of Mt. Meru. The whole monument is known as exo-architecture which is intended to be seen and used from the exterior rather than be "entered into" or have interior spaces. This further reiterates the sense of climbing a mountain, wandering among its valleys and progressing towards the peak.
