Title: The Great Stupa/Mount Meru at Borobudur, cross-section
Material: local volcanic rock
Site: Borobudur, Central Java, Indonesia
Current Location: in situ
Period/Date: ca. end of the 8th - beginning of the 9th century,
under the Shailendra Dynasty
Iconography/Iconology:
Stylistic Comments: This cross-section shows how the underlying mountain
was carved to receive the sculpture of Mt. Meru. The whole monument is known
as exo-architecture which is intended to be seen and used from the exterior
rather than be "entered into" or have interior spaces. This further
reiterates the sense of climbing a mountain, wandering among its valleys
and progressing towards the peak.
