South Asia: Pala Sculpture and Painting

Artist: unknown
Title: vajra
Material: stone
Site: Nalanda, India
Current Location: Nalanda Site Museum, India
Period/Date: Ca. 10th century?
Iconography/Iconology: Although they must have existed in some profusion,
ritual implements from Indic sites are very rarely met with. Whether they
were made from wood or metals, the vicissitudes of time have not been kind
to this material. Such implements, in both metal and wood, must have been
commonly used in ritual practices, as dictated in the Tantras.
