South Asia: Pala Sculpture and Painting

Artist: unknown
Title: Sadakshari Avalokitesvara
Material: stone
Site: Bhagalpur, Colgong Dt., Bihar, India
Current Location:
Period/Date: Ca. 12th century
Iconography/Iconology: Sakashari is one of the most important forms of Avalokitesvara in Northern Asia. He is considered identical to both Vajrasattva and the Adi Buddha. His presence in India in the 12th century suggest that, already, a large, public cult had developed around him. Normally, he would have held a gem between his two principle, cupped hands, while his upper right hand would have held a rosary, and his upper left hand would have held a lotus. Although these attributes are missing in this image, the importance of this image to the importance of Buddhism cannot be overestimed.
