Later Buddhist Art

Artist: unknown
Title: Buddha, standing, displaying abhayamudra
Material: Chunar sandstone
Site: Sarnath, near Varanasi, India
Current Location: Sarnath Museum, India
Period/Date: Gupta (ca. 5th century C.E.)
Iconography/Iconology: Standing under an umbrella that was associated
with it in its original installation, this traditional image of Sakyamuni
Buddha is typical of many that were made in the Sarnath idiom. It is included
here as a demonstration of the essentially repetative nature of the style
and as a very fine example of the style at its best.
