Later Buddhist Art

Artist: unknown
Title: Buddha attended by 2 bodhisattva, detail of right bodhisattva
Material: Chunar sandstone
Site: Sarnath, near Varanasi, India
Current Location: Sarnath Museum, India
Period/Date: Gupta (dated 476-477 C.E.)
Iconography/Iconology: This unidentified bodhisattva carries a cauri
in his right hand and a stalk of flower, possibly a lotus, in his right
hand. The brahmanical ascetic's dress of both bodhisattvas suggests that
at least one of the figures might be Avalokitesvara. However, his specifying
attributes are unclear, or missing, and it would be unlikely that two forms
of Avalokitesvara would attend a Buddha.
