Iconography/Iconology: Most of the bricks seen in this photograph are
from the Gupta period. To the far left are the remains of a temple known
as the "original" temple, but which was built about 100 feet east
of the
Mauryan period temple. The entire site was a pitha, "seat
of a teacher," marking the location of the First Sermon, and as such,
was one of the four great pilgrimage sites of Buddhism.
