Inner Asia: The Art of Nepal II: Newar Buddhist Art

Swayambhu caitya temple in the courtyard of Kwa Bahal, Patan. Complex
history but most of what is visible in the photograph is 20th century.
The details of the iconological symbolism tell the knowledgeable observer
that the Swayambhu Caitya is nothing more or less than the statement of
full enlightenment that a Buddhist practitioner seeks. However as noted
above, Swayambhu Mahacaitya is the consecrating force behind every Buddhist
institution and establishment in the valley. In this temple, which is in
the center of the courtyard at Kwa Bahal in Patan, is a surrogate of the
Swayambhu Mahacaitya. In this position it is considered to emanate the
entire Bahal, it's sacred space and the ritual areas in which the practices
take place.
