Inner Asia: The Art of Nepal II: Newar Buddhist Art

Between the shrine of Vairocana and that of Locana is yet another almost totally abstract shrine. It is that of Vairocana's Shakti, Vajradhatvisvari, who would be seated with him at the pinnacle of the Mahacaitya. She manifests both Prajnaparamita and the state of Sunya (Sunyata). Because she is so abstract and manifests the realized state of voidness she is rarely shown and is here seen as an empty niche ensconced in an elaborate throne back. The hole has been draped with a white garment just as if a figure was present.
