Inner Asia: The Art of Nepal II: Newar Buddhist Art

The left Makara. Emerging out of the Naga's tail is a Makara, a cosmogonic
water being from which all life arises, whose own tail twists into a series
of convolutes and essentially joins with the Naga's tail. These Nagas and
Makaras symbolize the prosperity and bringing of rains (which are the source
of prosperity in an agricultural community) to all humans.
