Inner Asia: The Art of Nepal II: Newar Buddhist Art

Guhyakali as displayed in the Chanting hall at Puran Guhyesvari. Print,
mid 20th century.
Of great significance is the fact that Guhyesvari is completely conflated
with the Kali, Astamatrika cults of Nepal. In the chanting hall are images
of Kali, Bhadrakali and Guhyakali -- all manifestations of the "Primordial
Goddess" as understood in Nepal. Indeed, Guhyesvari is essentially
a highly specialized version of the Ajima ("Grandmother") shrines
common throughout the valley.
