Stylistic Comments:
As seen in this detail, Ananda's smooth sinic features accurately portray the appearance of a young monk. The features are a reflection of the realistic sculptural idiom of 7th century Chinese Buddhist art. In particular, the softness of modelling, the subtle details around the mouth, and the raised brows, all suggest that a specific person was used as a model.
