The tomb in which this object was found, belonged to the lady, Marquise of Dai, a member of the royal family of the Chu state which controlled much of southern China during the early Han Dynasty. This banner may have been carried in a funeral procession and was subsequently placed over the inner coffin of the deceased lady.
